DULUTH, Minn. – The second-ranked St. Scholastica hockey team dominated play for much of the game Friday night, but two Pointer goals in the first minute of the second period proved to be the difference as Wisconsin-Stevens Point up-ended the No. 2-ranked Saints by a 4-1 final. The loss ends St. Scholastica's 14-game undefeated streak.
The Saints jumped on the scoreboard early with a #Joey Martini#
(Sr-Calgary, Alta) goal, assisted by #AJ Tucker#
(Sr.-Fort Frances, Ont.) and #Jeremy Dawes#
(Fr.-Winnipeg, Man.). Martini remains three back from Tucker for the team lead of 29 points after both received one tonight.
The Pointers would tie it up moments later and take the game into the first intermission tied 1-1. The Pointers came out of the locker incredibly strong, scoring two goals in the first 51 seconds of the second period.
CSS would have to struggle to regain the momentum, but finally did as they seemed to have scored a goal that would cut the deficit in half at about the halfway point of the second period. However, the goal was waved off after a length discussion because the goal judge determined the net had been removed from its moorings before the puck crossed the line. It was one of two goals waved off over the course of the game.
Despite outshooting the Pointers 36-22 for the game, the Saints simply could not solve Stevens Point goaltender Thomas Speer, who made 35 saves in the victory. Goaltender #Steve Bounds#
(Sr.-Airdrie, Alta.) gave up three goals while making 18 saves, holding the Saints in the game before being pulled for an extra attacker in the final minutes. It was then that Stevens Point scored their fourth and final goal, an empty-netter that traveled nearly the entire length of the ice.
The Saints, now 17-4-2 overall (8-3-1 NCHA), will play their final home game of the regular season tomorrow night when they host Wisconsin-Eau Claire, at Mars Lakeview Arena. The action begins at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on ESPN Radio 560 – WEBC.
