Hamers leads Saints for fifth straight game

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team was defeated by Luther College (Iowa) 60-58 this evening at the Presentation Classic.

The Saints fall to 2-10 on the season, while the Norse improve to 6-3. Luther defeated Presentation last night 75-74. This was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The first half featured five ties and eight lead changes. Neither team led by more than five points. The Norse led for the majority of the second part of the first half. A #Pat Franko# (Fr.-Rochester, Minn./Century) jumper tied the game with one minute to go before halftime. Luther nailed a jumper on the following possession to make the halftime score 29-27.

Both teams shot 44-percent in the half. Other similar statistics in the first half include that both teams were 2-for-8 on 3-point attempts and that each team had 16 rebounds.

The Saints scored the first points of the second half to tie it at 29-29. However, the Norse then went on an 11-0 run. CSS battled back and tied it at 46-46 with six minutes to go. The Saints tied it a little later, but could not get over the hump and take the lead. Luther went up seven with 16 seconds left and went on to win by final of 60-58.

The Saints shot 36-percent in the second half to finish at 39-percent for the game. Luther finished at 43-percent from the field for the game. CSS had a 37-33 rebounding edge and out-scored the Norse 17-8 on second-chance points.

#Chris Hamers# (Jr.-Onamia, Minn.) led the Saints for the fifth straight game with 18 points. #Brett Tester# (Fr.-Andover, Minn.) added 12 points. Tester and #Derek Anderson# (Jr.-Cook, Minn.) each had a team-high nine rebounds. Tyler Wedemeier had 10 points to lead the Norse.

The Saints have off until Friday, January 8th when it returns to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) competition as it hosts Presentation College in Reif Gym.
