MEN’S BASKETBALL DROPS ONE TO RIVAL

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team was defeated this afternoon by bridge rival University of Wisconsin-Superior by a score of 78-59 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

The Saints fall to 1-3 overall, while the Yellowjackets improve to 2-1 on the year. The Saints fall to 8-18 against the 'Jackets all-time and have lost three straight games to Superior.

Both teams struggled shooting the ball early as the score was 4-4 six minutes into the contest. The Yellowjackets then went on a 10-1 run to go up 14-5 with nine minutes in the first half. CSS battled back and took a one-point lead following a #Danny Schmitz# (Jr.-Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) 3-pointer to make it 23-22 with 4:45 left in the half. However, Superior closed the half on a 15-5 run to take a 37-28 halftime advantage.

The Saints shot 29-percent in the first half, while the Yellowjackets were at 44-percent. #Logan Schultz# (Jr.-Perham, Minn.) had a nice half for CSS as he had 11 points, going 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Superior out-scored St. Scholastica 11-4 in second-chance points in the half.

Unfortunately, the Saints would not threaten in the second half. The margin got as close as seven at the beginning of the half, but it was in double-figures for the majority of the time as the Yellowjackets went on to win 78-59.

CSS shot significantly better in the second half at 64-percent to finish at 43-percent for the game. The Yellowjackets finished at 47-percent shooting for the game. Superior owned the edge on the glass 33-25. The Saints out-scored the Yellowjackets in the paint 30-26.

Logan Schultz (Perham, Minn./Perham HS) scored a career-high 17 points to lead St. Scholastica. #Brett Tester# (Fr.-Andover, Minn.) added nine points and #Max Dibrell# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./East) scored eight. Dibrell also had a career-high seven assists in the contest. Jake Smith had a game-high 19 points to lead Superior.

The Saints will begin Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action next weekend when they travel to Northwestern College on Friday night. The tip-off is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m., following the women's game.
