DULUTH, Minn. – For the first time since the 2007 season, the St. Scholastica volleyball team rallied from two sets down to defeat the University of Minnesota-Morris in five sets this evening at Reif Gym as both teams participated in a “Dig Pink” event for breast cancer awareness.
In honor of the event, the Saints wore pink warm-up jerseys and sold baked goods. The Cougars wore pink uniform tops during the match. The primary goal of the event is to raise awareness and promote breast cancer education.
Morris was in control early with 17 kills in the first set and a .289 attack percentage. The Cougars pulled away late in that first set to win 25-18. Morris did not trail in the second set and had 15 kills to take a commanding two-set lead, winning 25-20.
The Saints refused to be swept and controlled the third set, winning 25-16. CSS had a match-high 15 kills and a .400 attack percentage in the set. The fourth set was tight throughout. With it tied 18-18, #Paige Hardy# (
Fr.-Hibbing, Minn.) went on a string of three straight kills to give CSS a 20-18 advantage. With the score 24-23, #Rebecca Udermann# (
Sr. Rosemount, Minn.) sent the match into a fifth set with a kill to give the Saints a 25-23 set win.
In the fifth-and-deciding set, both teams went back-and-forth. Five straight errors halfway through the set by Morris gave the Saints a 10-7 lead. The Cougars climbed back in it and with the score 14-13 #Megan Baartman# (
Sr.-Andover, Minn.) ended the match with a kill to give the Saints the dramatic 15-13 victory.
Paige Hardy (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) led the way with 15 kills, while
Rebecca Udermann (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) added 13 kills for the Saints. Hardy also led the team with 24 digs. #Sarah Kurtovich# (
Fr.-Andover, Minn.) had a season-high 41 set assists.
The Saints improve to 9-11 overall and 3-2 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The Cougars also fall to 9-11 overall and 3-2 in the UMAC. CSS is now 14-1 all-time against Morris.
The Saints will host Presentation College tomorrow night in another “Dig Pink” event. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Reif Gym in the Burns Wellness Commons.
