SAINTS AND AUGGIES PLAY TO A TIE

MINNEAPOLIS – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team played the Augsburg College Auggies to a 1-1 tie this evening in a non-conference match at Edor Nelson Field.

CSS is now 8-3-2 on the year, while the Auggies are 3-4-4. The Saints are 7-4-2 all-time against Augsburg. The last time the Saints played a night match was in the 2007 NCAA Division III Tournament when the Saints defeated Carroll College in the first round, but then fell to Wheaton College in the second round.

Augsburg was in control of the first half, out-shooting the Saints 12-7. The Auggies took the lead early when Lisa Weniger scored on a header off of a corner kick in the 16th minute.

After halftime, CSS became the aggressor controlling possession for most of the half. #Beth Flesvig# (Sr.-Proctor, Minn.) ran down a pass from #Ellyn Litecky# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./East) and beat the Augsburg keeper far right post 37 seconds into the second half to tie the score 1-1. The Saints got five shots on net in the half, while the Auggies did not get a shot on goal. The score remained 1-1 after 90 minutes of play and the Saints entered their third overtime match this season.

St. Scholastica continued on the attack in the first overtime getting two shots on goal, but the match remained tied after the first 10-minute session.

The second 10-minute overtime was controlled by the Auggies, getting two shots on net, including one that hit the side of the CSS net. However, the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Augsburg out-shot the Saints 23-17, but CSS had the edge with shots on goal (10-7). The Saints did not have a corner kick in the match. #Erin Olejnicak# (So.-Brainerd, Minn.) stopped six shots in the tie for the Saints, while Katie Flakne had nine saves for the Auggies.

The Saints will be in conference play this weekend as they travel to Bethany Lutheran College on Friday and Martin Luther College on Saturday to start the second half of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) schedule. Friday's match at Bethany Lutheran is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
