SAINTS SPLIT IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON MATCHES

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team went 1-1 this afternoon at Reif Gym, falling to regular season conference champion Northwestern College, 3-0, and then sweeping the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The Saints finish the regular season with a 17-13 overall record and a 10-4 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) record. The Saints finish in second place in the league and will host a UMAC Tournament semifinal match on Tuesday.

The Saints started the day against conference power, Northwestern College. The Eagles had already wrapped up the regular season title, but were looking to extend their conference unbeaten streak to 29 matches.

The opening set was tight with five ties and two lead changes. With the score 20-20, the Eagles captured the next four points and took the set 25-21.

The Saints trailed for most of the second set and were down 17-12 late. However, CSS clawed back into the match and tied the score at 23-23. After a long really that could have went either way, Northwestern got the point and took the second set 25-23.

The Eagles took control of the third set, scoring the first five points, and St. Scholastica never recovered as the Eagles took the match 25-20.

#Rebecca Udermann# (Sr.-Rosemount, Minn.) had a career-high 16 kills to lead the Saints. #Sarah Kurtovich# (Fr.-Andover, Minn.) had 32 set assists and #Nikki Hughes# (So.-South Range, Wis./Northwestern) had 18 digs. Northwestern finished the regular season 14-0 in the conference and 21-10 overall after defeating UW-Stevens Point in second match today.

After the Pointers fell to Northwestern, they went up against the Saints in the final match of the day. After a slow start, the Saints took control of the first set, going on a 9-1 run and taking the set 25-19.

CSS had a 9-1 run again in the second set to win it by the same score as the first 25-19. It was all St. Scholastica in set number three as it scored the first 11 points and went on to win 25-13.

Udermann led the Saints once again with 13 kills to give her 29 kills in the two matches. #Paige Hardy# (Fr.-Hibbing, Minn.) added 10 kills. Kurtovich had 38 set assists. The Pointers end the regular season with a 13-21 record.

The Saints will host Northland College in a UMAC Tournament semifinal match on Tuesday night at Reif Gym. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. It can be seen live, courtesy of the iFan Sports Network, at csssaints.com.
