STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The 13th-ranked St. Scholastica hockey team completed the season-opening weekend sweep at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point tonight with a 2-1 victory at Willett Arena.

According to the history books, this is the first known time the Saints have started the season with two victories. The previous best start was the 2004-05 season, head coach Mark Wick's first season, when CSS tied the season opener and then went on to win the next two games. The Pointers fall to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA).

The Saints are tied for first with St. Norbert and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for first place. The two teams that finished ahead of the Saints last season, UW-Stout and UW-Superior, are 0-2 in the league to start this season.

Just like last night, the first period went scoreless with Stevens Point having a slight edge in shots 13-10. In the second period, #Riley Riddell# (Jr.-Wawota, Sask.) scored his second goal of the season on the power-play just over five minutes into the period to make it 1-0 CSS. #Austin Brown# (So.-Lathrup Village, Mich.) and #Tyler Miller# (Fr.-Fort Frances, Ont.) had the assists.

The score remained that way until the third period when the Saints added a pivotal insurance goal as #Garet Chumley# (Fr.-Cambridge, Minn.) netted his first collegiate goal to extend the lead to 2-0 with 4:51 seconds left in the game. #Colin Trachsel# (Fr.-St. Louis, Mo.) and #Paul Marcoux# (Fr.-Ottawa, Ont.) had the assists.

The Pointers stayed in the game with an even-handed goal with 2:42 seconds left. It got really interesting at the end as the Saints were called for a penalty with over a minute remaining and after the Stevens Point pulled the goalie it was 6-on-4. However, the Saints' penalty killing unit held strong and the Saints pulled out a 2-1 victory.

CSS goaltender #Brennan Poderzay# (So.-Tower, Minn.) improves to 2-0 in his first two collegiate starts of this young season. Poderzay stopped 34 shots in the victory. Thomas Speer had 25 saves in the loss for the Pointers.

The Saints will be at home next weekend when it faces St. John's on Friday and Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena. Both games will begin at 7:05 p.m. each night.
