ELLENDALE, N.D. – For the first time in program history the St. Scholastica defense would not allow a score as the Saints defeated Trinity Bible College 46-7 this afternoon at Bob Tatum Field to snap a two-game losing streak.
The lone score for the Lions in the game came on a Saints fumble that was recovered in the end zone. The seven points are the fewest allowed by the Saints in the two-year history of the program and 39-point margin of victory matches the largest winning margin, which was also against the Lions last season (47-8).
The Saints received the ball first and started with great field position, but would fumble on a fourth-and-goal try and give the ball to Trinity Bible. However on Trinity Bible's first play, #Dan Erickson# (
Fr.-Duluth, Minn./Central) intercepted a pass and returned it down to the Lions' 3-yard-line. CSS scored a play later on a #Christopher Henagin# (
Sr.-Cloquet, Minn.) 3-yard touchdown plunge. #Matt Holter# (
Fr.-Proctor, Minn.) added the extra point and the score was 7-0.
The Saints scored again on its next possession, this time an 8-yard touchdown run by quarterback #Jake Olson# (
So.-Esko, Minn.) to make it 14-0.
Following another CSS fumble, the Lions were driving inside the Saints' 5-yard-line at the start of the second quarter. Trinity Bible had first-and-goal from the three, but the CSS defense stood tall and stuffed back-to-back running plays for negative yardage. Then two straight incompletions gave the ball back to the Saints.
With less than four minutes left in the first half, CSS added another touchdown as Henagin scored his second of the day from 20 yards out to make it 20-0. Henagin now has 11 touchdowns this season. The Saints got the ball back before halftime and
Jake Olson (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) would connect with #Mike VanMassenhove# (
So.-Superior, Wis.) for a 46-yard touchdown with 1:20 on the clock to make it 26-0.
The Saints were still not done scoring in the half as Trinity Bible quarterback Clint Linthicum would get sacked on the first play of the possession and lose the football, which was scooped up #Chas Lemon# (
Fr.-Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle, Minn.) and he returned it 25 yards for a touchdown to make 33-0. Lemon becomes the first Saint in history to return a fumble for a touchdown. The Saints scored 19 points in the final 3:50 seconds of the first half to go into halftime with a 33-0 lead.
In the second half, Olson and VanMassenhove hooked up one more time for a 35-yard touchdown strike to make it 39-0. The Lions got on the scoreboard with nine minutes left in the game went the Saints fumbled the ball into the end zone and Lions recovered to make it 39-7.
St. Scholastica scored one final touchdown as #Matt Bacon# (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) threw his first collegiate touchdown to #Justin Hanson# (
Fr.-Atwater, Minn./ACGC) for 41 yards to make the final score 46-7. That was also Hanson's first collegiate touchdown.
The Saints out-gained Trinity Bible 366-187. The CSS defense set another record with four interceptions in a game.
Dan Erickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) had two interceptions, which ties a record individually, and #Rob Astleford# (
Fr.-Orr, Minn.) and #Justin Trautmiller# (
So.-Somerset, Wis.) had the other two.
