ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team won a tight five-set match this evening over Northland College to reach the .500-mark for the first time this season.
The Saints improve to 11-11 overall and 5-2 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The LumberJills fall to 10-14 overall and are also 5-2 in the conference. The teams end the first half of the UMAC schedule in a tie for second place in the league.
Things didn't start so good for the Saints in the opening set as Northland controlled the set and won by a score of 25-14. CSS responded in the second set and had no sweat taking it by a score of 25-13.
The third set would be much tighter. The Saints led for the majority of the set, but fell behind 21-19. However, St. Scholastica pulled together and scored the next five points and ended up winning the set 25-22. CSS had a match-high 16 kills in the set.
The Saints took an early lead in the fourth set, looking to end the match, but the LumberJills hung in and forced the match to a fifth set with a 25-18 set win.
In the fifth set, the Saints jumped out to a lead, but the margin got within one late. The Saints held the lead and took the match with a 15-13 fifth set victory. The Saints extend their winning streak over the 'Jills to 28 straight matches.

Fr.-Hibbing, Minn.) led the Saints with a season-high 19 kills. Hardy also had a team-high 29 digs. Seniors #Megan Baartman# (
Sr.-Andover, Minn.) and #Rebecca Udermann# (
Sr.-Rosemount, Minn.) had 15 and 10 kills respectively. #Sarah Kurtovich# (
Fr.-Andover, Minn.) had a season-high 45 set assists.
The Saints will remain away from home this weekend when it travels to Bethany Lutheran on Friday and Martin Luther on Saturday. Friday's match at Bethany Lutheran is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
