Corey Kemp is returning as Interim Head Baseball Coach for the 2023 season

Kemp spent 10 years as a head coach in the UMAC, this will be his first year as a interim head coach for the MIAC.

In his first nine seasons, Kemp has guided the Saints to nine straight UMAC regular season championships and eight tournament championships. His teams have played in eight NCAA Regional Tournaments. In three of those NCAA appearances the Saints have been within two wins of a regional championship.

In his first season, the team broke a program record with 24 consecutive wins and finished with 38 wins overall on the year, the third-most in program history and the most as an NCAA affiliate. In 2012, his team led all NCAA Divisions in runs per game (9.3) and made its second NCAA regional championship game appearance in program history. The Saints finished unbeaten in league play for the first time since 2006 and won their first two games at a NCAA regional for the first time in program history on their way to a third place finish.  During the 2014 season, the Saints led all of NCAA Division III with 138 stolen bases. In 2016, the Saints finished second in the country with a team earned run average of 2.77 and last season CSS tied for a NCAA-best 11 shutouts.

He has coached six UMAC Players of the Year and four UMAC Pitchers of the Year. Kemp was named the UMAC Coach of the Year in 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The Saints swept the UMAC Postseason Awards in 2015 and 2016.

Kemp earned his 100th coaching victory in 2012, becoming the fastest to reach 100 wins by any coach in CSS Athletics history. He then won his 200th game in only his 260th career contest.

Kemp had served as one of the Saints’ top assistant coaches and pitching coach for the previous eight years under the late John Baggs.

In his eight seasons as an assistant coach, Kemp has developed one of the top pitching staffs in all of Division III baseball.  His Saints hurlers led the nation in ERA in both 2005 and 2006.  In 2009, Kemp’s pitchers finished fifth in ERA in the country and third in winning percentage.  In his eight seasons as a pitching coach, six of Kemp’s pitchers have gone on to sign professional contracts, including Brett Nyquist who was taken in the 13th round of the 2002 MLB draft by the Montreal Expos and Adian Kummet who was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the June 2009 draft.

As a player, Kemp began his outstanding pitching career at Cherry High School where he led his team to the Class A State Championship in 1997.  He completed his high school pitching career with a 21-4 record over three seasons of varsity baseball, including a 10-0 mark his senior year.

This winning tradition continued with the Saints as Kemp became one of the greatest and most dedicated players in CSS baseball history.

In the UMAC Tournament his junior season, Kemp surpassed Ben Sickler (20 wins) to become the Saints all-time winningest pitcher and finished his career with 29 wins, still tops in Saints history.  Kemp is also the career leader in innings pitched (233) and strikeouts (258).  His 2.15 career ERA was also the program’s best upon Kemp’s graduation in 2001.

Kemp’s abilities didn’t go unnoticed, as he was named UMAC Pitcher of the Year in 2000 and an All-American following his senior season. He also played professionally briefly in 2001 before becoming a coach at St. Scholastica.  Kemp was inducted into the St. Scholastica Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.
