Martin Alcoverde (Tucson, Ariz. /Sahuarita HS (Mesabi Range CC)) threw a complete-game, one-hitter as the St. Scholastica baseball team conquered Webster University (Mo.) 3-0 Saturday morning to end the team's spring break trip. at the Russmatt Invitational.
The Action
Alcoverde struck out the side in the bottom of the first and struck out the first batter in the second.
Drew Colvard (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS ) reached on an error in the top of the third for the first base runner of the game. The first hit of the game didn't come until the top of the fourth when St. Scholastica's
Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS ) singled out to left field. Alcoverde again struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth. Colvard was able to advance to third in the top of the sixth, but back-to-back strikeouts ended that threat.
The Gorlocks got their first hit of the game to leadoff the bottom of the seventh with a double. However, that base-runner would not advanced any farther the rest of the inning as the game remained scoreless entering the eighth.
In the top of the eighth,
Conor Wollenzien (North Mankato, Minn. /Mankato West HS) had a leadoff double of his own. After moving to third on a passed ball,
Joey Zwak (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS ) singled through to the right side, scoring Wollenzien putting the Saints ahead 1-0. Two batters later,
Tim Munn (Champlin, Minn. /Champlin Park HS ) followed with another RBI, singling through to the right side allowing Zwak to score. The score would be 2-0 going into the ninth.
In the ninth inning,
Steven Neutzling (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral ) helped to extend the CSS lead by singling up the middle. Minks then ran into score, making it 3-0. Fittingly, Alcoverde finished the job in the ninth, striking out two of the final three hitters, including last batter to give the Saints a 3-0 victory.
Alcoverde struck out 12 and allowed only one hit and one walk in the complete-game shutout. That's his first nine-inning complete-game shutout in his career as a Saint. Matt Goro had eight strikeouts in the loss for the Gorloks (8-6).
Riley Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn. /Floodwood HS) and Zwak each had two of St. Scholastica's eight hits.
