Notables-CSS wins 15th UMAC Tournament title overall-Engelstad sets single-season program record with 20th singles victory-The Saints have won at least 18 matches the last four seasons
MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – For the fourth straight year, the St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated the University of Northwestern to capture the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship, winning by a 9-0 score.
Doubles:The No. 1 team of
Josh Stainer (Portsmouth, England/South Downs College) and
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) were challenged, but they ultimately prevailed 8-6. Both the No. 2 team of
Logan Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and
Cody Mauston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS), along with the No. 3 team of
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)), won by 8-1 scores.
Singles:Stainer (No. 1) was forced to a third set super-breaker, but he came out on top 6-0, 2-6, (10-7). Mack (No. 2) won by scores of 6-3, 6-4.
Engelstad (No. 3) won his 11
th singles match in a row and become the first CSS men's tennis player to record 20 wins in a season with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Fontana (No. 4) was victorious by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
Those were same scores for Mauston (No. 5), but were flipped around 6-1, 6-3. The final winner was Bates (No. 6) by scores of 6-1, 6-0.
The Saints finish their season 18-8 and say goodbye to four seniors: Mack, Mauston, Bates and
