Men’s Hockey Wins Third Straight

Box Score RIVER FALLS, Wis. (csssaints.com) – Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored twice and added an assist as the St. Scholastica men's hockey team won its third straight game with a 5-2 victory Friday night at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

The Falcons, who entered tonight's contest on a six-game winning streak, fell behind 1-0 in the first five minutes when Marcoux scored his first of the night. Brenden Kotyk (Regina, Saskatchewan/Michael A. Riffel HS (Dauphin-MJHL) ) and Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) picked up the assists.

After River Falls tied it later in the period, the Saints answered when Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored on the power-play less than three minutes later to make it 2-1 at the end of the period. Kotyk and Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) picked up the assists.

Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) scored his team-best 10th goal of the season to extend the CSS lead to 3-1 five minutes into the second period. His brother, Dylan, and Marcoux picked up the assists.

It remained 3-1 into the third period, when the Falcons' Willie Hess made it 3-2 with 12 minutes to play. However, the Saints got some breathing room on a Keegan Bruce (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS (Weyburn-SJHL) ) goal with under six minutes left in regulation. Chris Sinclair (Fort Frances, Ontario/Beaver Brae Secondary (Fort Frances-SIJHL) ) and Williams were credited with the assists. Marcoux then added an empty-netter late to give the Saints the 5-2 victory.

Tyler Bruggeman (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Austin-NAHL) ) earned his third straight win in goal, stopping 25 shots. Scott Lewan had 27 saves in the loss for the Falcons. CSS did not allow a power-play goal for the second straight game, the first time that has happened this season.

The Saints (6-11-0, 3-8-0 NCHA) and Falcons (10-6-2, 3-6-2 NCHA) will play game two of their series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Hear all of the action live on Saints Sports Net.
