Box Score
The Saints men's soccer team lost in a heartbreaker to the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars in a 6-5 shootout after the game ended in a 2-2 tie Saturday at Saints Field.
This was the fifth straight meeting between the Saints and Cougars (11-4-4) in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Championship. The Cougars earned their revenge as the Saints won the matchup last year in championship.
Both
Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) of the Saints and Tyler Weber of the Cougars made two saves in the first half and that was enough to send the teams into halftime deadlocked at zero.
The scoreless tie would be broken in the 48th minute when
Kyle Farrar (Sevenoaks, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) scored on assists from
Brandon Stemwedel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) and
Ace Amin (Vasteras, Sweden/Rudbeckianska Gym) to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
CSS would extend their lead in the 72nd minute when Farrar put his second goal in on an assist from Amin to put the Saints ahead 2-0 late in the game.
The Cougars would get on the board just two minutes later when Toby Glaser scored on an assist from Dylan Urban to cut the deficit to one for Morris.
Amin received his second yellow card of the game in the 83rd minute resulting in a red card ejection, so the Saints would have to play a man down the rest of the way.
The Cougars' miracle would come with just 1:21 left on the clock when Ebrima Badgie scored right in front of the net off of a Glaser assist.
Both teams held strong in the two overtime periods and the game officially ended in a tie with a penalty kick shootout to come.
The first five for each team put in four goals to force a golden goal shootout with five new shooters for each team.
The first shooters for each team scored to make it 5-5 in the shootout. Weber made a save on the
Ryan Cullen (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) attempt and the Cougars' second shooter got one past Reed to give Morris the shootout victory and the conference title.
Farrar's goals gives him 43 points in an impressive freshman season. Stemwedel's assist gives him 25 points and Amin's two assists gives him 14 points on the season.
Reed made six saves as his record fell to 15-4-1 in an impressive season in which he took over the top spot for CSS in career wins and career shutouts.
The Saints (16-3-2) have most likely played their final game of the season as they don't expect an at-large bid into the national tournament. If so, the Saints end an impressive season after winning the regular season UMAC title and going undefeated in the regular season.
