This Week in the UMAC
ST. PAUL – A total of seven St. Scholastica student-athletes have been named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Players of the Week in their respective sports; it was announced today by UMAC Sports Information Director Greg Johnson.
Junior #Matt Lewis# (
Jr.-Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) earned the UMAC Pitcher of Week award after going 2-0 with victories over regional rival St. Olaf College and conference-foe Bethany Lutheran College last week. Lewis earned his first collegiate shutout against the Oles, striking out eight in CSS's 8-0 victory. He then struck out seven to complete the series sweep of Bethany Lutheran.
Junior #Jen Falk# (
Jr.-Altona, Man.) earned softball pitcher of the week honors as she went 3-0 with three complete games and one shutout. In the three games, Falk allowed just two earned runs and registered 20 strikeouts.
Falk's teammate, sophomore #Merryssa Tiedeman# (
So.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) has been named the conference's player of the week. Tiedeman had a hit in all seven games last week and recorded a RBI in five of the games. She had five doubles, a triple, and hit two home runs. Tiedeman also had seven assists from the outfield.
Junior #Tim Dean# (
Jr.-Rhinelander, Wis.) was named the UMAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after going 4-0 in doubles matches and 2-0 in singles matches in leading the Saints to their 14th straight UMAC regular season title.
Senior #Katie Motley# (
Sr.-Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) was named the UMAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week. Motley went 3-0 in both doubles and singles action as just like the men, the women secured their 14th consecutive conference title.
Sophomore #Tom Lyscio# (
So.-Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) earned the conference men's track & field player of the week award for the second consecutive week. Lyscio won three events at the Twin Ports Twilight last Wednesday, coming out on top in the hammer throw (47.85m), shot put (14.36m), and discus (40.03m). At Saturday's North Country Invitational, Lyscio won the hammer throw again with a school-record toss of 51.19m.
Sophomore #Nikki Hughes# (
So.-South Range, Wis./Northwestern) received the UMAC Women's Track & Field Player of the Week after winning 400-meter dash in a time of 1:00.94 seconds and anchoring the sprint medley relay team, which recorded a school record time at the Twin Ports Twilight. At the North Country Invitational, Hughes won the 800-meter run in a school record time and led the 4x400-meter relay team to first-place finish.
