SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Local and regional track and field talent met up in Superior on Valentine's Day to continue progressing towards conference championship weekend. The MIAC, NSIC, UMAC, and WIAC were all represented at UW-Superior's Maday Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Shayna Wick (Poplar, WI/Northwestern High School) started the winning trend for the Saints in the day's first event - the long jump. Wick's best leap of the day went 4.79m to take the crown.
To start the action on the track, first year standout
Allison Fink (Mountain Iron, MN/Rock Ridge High School) hit high gear and brought the fastest qualifier out of prelims with a time of 8.17 seconds. Fink held her ground in the final and out-leaned two challengers to claim her first collegiate victory in a blistering time of 8.15 seconds. This time improves Fink's standing as number seven on the Saints all-time list.
Regan Niemi (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji HS) took the track by storm in the 1000 meter race on Saturday. In the event that she holds the current Saints school record in, Niemi controlled the race from start to finish to break the tape in 3:04.77. Her teammate
Madeline Hartley (Rosemount, MN/Rosemount HS) crossed the line in second place with a personal best run of 3:14.98.
Ella Stritesky (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS) snatched yet another meet victory in the hammer throw. Stritesky won on her final attempt with a launch of 16.50m.
Lucy Rappana (Duluth, MN/Duluth East High School) blasted out of the blocks and found her rhythm in the 60m hurdle prelims. Rappana's time of 9.73 seconds is a new personal best and improves Rappana's mark as the seventh fastest 60m hurdler in school history. Rappana held up her place in the finals and finished third overall in a time of 9.89 seconds.
Team captain
Kayla Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) continued her return to the track in style on Saturday. Nelson dove into the fast heat of the 400m dash and fought to finish third overall with a time of 1:03.08. This is an indoor personal record for Nelson.
In the triple jump,
Jillian Bilben (International Falls, MN/Falls High School) and
Elli Schritz (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) finished second and third place, respectively. Bilben had the edge with her jump of 9.94m, compared to Schritz's 9.90m.
Grace McCormick (Duluth, MN/Denfeld HS) placed third in the mile with a time of 5:49.69.
Abby Wood ran to a personal best finish in the 5000m. Her time of 19:00.85 moved her into ninth all time for the Saints.
The Saints have one more meet to finalize their qualification marks for the MIAC Championships. The final regular season meet lands next Friday at St. Olaf College. The MIAC Indoor Championships take place on February 27th and 28th at Carleton College.
