Women's Hockey Drops Conference Series Against Cobbers

Duluth, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's hockey team hosted the Cobbers of Concordia–Moorehead in the second of a two-game MIAC Conference series. After last nights loss against the Cobbers, the Saints went in with aspirations to get their first MIAC points of the season. Things did not go the way of the Saints, as the Cobbers took game two with a score of 5-2.

How it Happened

First Period

Period one opened with neither team finding much footing in the game. The Saints managed to find themselves on a power play nearing the end of the period, but were unable to capitalize on the extra-skater advantage.

Both teams competed hard in their offensive zones, managing a combined 16 shots on goal between the teams, with an even split of eight a piece. Victoria Nelson (Mahtomedi, MN/Mahtomedi HS) led the team in shots on goal in the first period with two.

The only goal scored in the first came with under a minute remaining in the period, closing the period with a 1-0 Cobber lead.

Second Period
The Saints wasted no time in the second period as Hanley Block (Alexandria, MN/Alexandria HS) received the puck from Paige Blattner (Avon, MN/River Lakes HS) and Kendra Royer (Duluth, MN/Duluth Marshall HS) and took it down with an odd man rush, ultimately beating the goaltenders glove side. Blocks goal, just seven minutes into the period tied the game.

This tie did not last long, with Suzi Vidmar (Boise, Idaho./Timberline HS) netting the Saints' second goal of the game. Vidmar registered this goal unassisted.

Period three continued on but saw no more scoring. Going into intermission, the Saints now found themselves up 2-1 with.

Third Period
The final periods actions started even earlier than the second. With Concordia opening things up just two-and-a-half minutes into the period, the game was once again tied, this time at 2-2 following another Cobbers goal.

Not much longer, Concordia recorded two more goals, one at 3:45, and the other at 6:25, widening the deficit, with a score of 4-2.

The Saints began an offensive push to try and dig into the deficit, they even managed to draw a penalty, giving them a one-skater advantage. Later, before action resumed, the Saints pulled Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, MN/Grand Rapids HS) from the net to gain another one-skater advantage.

This effort offensively got the Saints close to another goal, but with just 48 seconds remaining in the game, Concordia found the back of the net to record the empty net goal.

The game would end quickly thereafter with a final score of 5-2.
