Wauwatosa, Wis. – The Saint Scholastica football team traveled down the interstate headed to Wauwatosa, Wis. to open their season against the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors. Today's season opener ended with the Saints taking a dominant victory over the Warriors, ending with a final score of 41-27.
How it Happened
First Quarter
The scoring began midway through the first quarter when Jevon Williams (Willmar, MN/Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (ACGC)) capped a sharp 7-play, 51-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. The offensive line paved the way, and kicker Jacob Andrews (Owatonna, MN/Medford HS) added the extra point to put the Saints up 7–0.
Second Quarter
Early in the second quarter, the Saints struck again. Receiver Andrew Burgess found himself with the ball behind the line of scrimmage and launched a pass to Quarterback Donald West (St. Paul, MN/Woodbury HS) streaking downfield for a 43-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 13–0. Just minutes later, West showed off his versatility, this time tossing a 78-yard strike to Curtis Favors (St. Paul, MN/Tartan HS), who broke free and raced into the end zone. Andrews' PAT pushed the Saints' advantage to a commanding 20–0.
Third Quarter
Wisconsin Lutheran clawed back with two scores before halftime, trimming the Saints' lead to 20–14. But the Saints responded out of the locker room with authority. On their opening third-quarter possession, Williams ripped off a powerful 38-yard touchdown run, finishing an 81-yard drive and putting St. Scholastica ahead 27–14.
Fourth Quarter
The Warriors answered with a touchdown of their own, but the Saints' offense continued to click. Early in the fourth quarter, Williams barreled in from seven yards out, his third rushing touchdown of the afternoon, to make it 34–20. Wisconsin Lutheran managed to cut the margin to a single score again, but the Saints closed the door in emphatic fashion. With just over three minutes remaining, Williams punched in his fourth touchdown of the game — a 13-yard run that sealed the 41–27 win.
