River Falls, Wis. – The Saint Scholastica Women's hockey team traveled across the state border to Wisconsin to play the Falcons of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in their third contest of the season. Tonight's game was a very well-fought endeavor throughout all 60 minutes, but ended with the Falcons claiming the 4-3 victory.
How it Happened
First Period
It did not take long for the Saints to strike first against the Falcons. After starting on their heels, holding down the defense, the Saints' Suzi Vidmar (Boise, Idaho./Timberline HS) and Morgan Mitchell (Farmington, MN/Farmington HS) brought the puck down to ice into the Falcons zone and found Grace Chapman (Blaine, MN/Blaine HS) who buried the Saints first goal of the game six minutes in.
Following Chapman's first goal, both teams matched each other's veracity, taking the puck back and forth for just over five minutes. It was then that Chapman got the puck from Mitchell and Alaina Hedberg (St. Paul, MN/Tartan HS), and once again beat the Falcons' goaltender, recording the Saints second goal of the night, and securing a 2-0 lead before the first intermission.
Second Period
Following another defensive opening from the Saints, the Falcons were the first on the board in the second period, beating the Saints defense just over four minutes into period two. Following the Falcons first goal, the Saints once again had to reel back on defense, facing a total of 21 shots in ten minutes, and successfully killing off one penalty.
It was at the 14 minute mark that the fourth goal of the night was scored, another Falcon managed to shoot through the Saints defense and tie the game at 2-2. Only four minutes later, River Falls' offense connected with the back of the net, closing the second period out with a score of 2-3.
Third Period
The Saints wasted no time in the third period, as Hedberg once again found Chapman for the Saints third goal of the night, completing the hat trick for Chapman. As quickly as the Saints scored, the Falcons took back their lead. It only took three minutes for the Falcons to once again put the puck in the net, bringing the score to 3-4.
The Saints were forced on their heels once again as the majority of the remaining time in the period was spent on defense, battling against 22 total shots from the Falcons. With a minute remaining to play, the Saints pulled their goalie hoping to net the equalizing goal, but instead suffered another penalty ultimately ending the game with a final score of 3-4.
