Women’s Tennis Drops Match With Gusties

VIRGINIA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica College women's tennis team was dispatched 1-8 by Gustavus Adolphus College on Friday evening at the Quad City Indoor in Virginia. The Lady Saints (5-12) pushed Gustavus Adolphus (11-9) the distance to a handful of tightly contested superbreaker finishes in the singles portion of the dual match but could only take one match from their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foes. Gustavus improves to 5-0 in the MIAC and St. Scholastica moves to 2-6.

Doubles
To kick off the match St. Scholastica would keep things tight with the Gusties on doubles courts No.1 and No. 2. The top tandem of Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and Anna Ritchie (Becker, Minn./Becker HS) would go down at the number one line 4-8 and the Ecuadorian duo Mishell Benitez (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Tecnico Particular a Distancia José Martí) and Martina Garcia (Cuenca, Ecuador/Catalinas HS (Eastern Florida State College)) would be slightly edged 6-8 at the number two line. Gustavus Adolphus would grab the remaining three line 8-1 and all the available doubles points heading into singles play.

Singles
The Gusties would be pushed hard by the Saints, led by Maier on the No. 1 court and Katia Bartels (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View HS) on court No. 5, who both were able to take their Gustie opponents the distance to a third set superbreaker.

Maier fell just short to her nationally ranked opponent Yuki Oda, 4-6, 6-1, 6-10 and Bartels was able to close things out for the lone Saints win, 6-3, 2-6, 10-7. The Gusties would claim the rest of the singles matches in straight set fashion to close out the match.

Up Next
Weather permitting this week will feature the Saints taking on former cross bridge UMAC rival the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets in a contest scheduled outdoors at  the Longview Tennis Club in east Duluth on Tuesday at 4 p.m. To conclude the 2022-23 regular season the Saints will be hosting two MIAC opponents at home, Saint Mary's on Saturday and Hamline on Sunday. Location of these matches has yet to be determined.
