DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team started the season with two non-conference opponents. The matches were played at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center. The team won their first match against Bemidji State 4-3 but lost the border battle with Minnesota Duluth 5-0.
CSS vs BSU
Doubles
The Saints won all three doubles matches with the No. 1 team of Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and Mishell Benitez (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Tecnico Particular a Distancia José Martí) winning 6-2.
The No. 2 team of Martina Garica and Katia Bartells won 6-3.
The No. 3 team of Anna Ritchie (Becker, Minn./Becker HS) and Annika Lundell (Hibbing, Minn.) won their match 6-2.
Singles
In singles play, the Saints and Beavers each won three matches.
Garica won by default at the No. 2 spot.
At the No. 5 spot Maya Nibbe (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS) claimed the victory with scores of 6-4, 6-2.
Eva Kangas (Grand Rapids, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy – Grand Rapids HS) won with scores of 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.
CSS vs UMD
Doubles
The Saints would fall to all three double matches against the Bulldogs.
The No. 2 team of Garica and Ritchie came the closest but lost 6-3.
Singles
In singles play, the Saints wouldn't be able to grab a win in the six matches.
Garica and Ritchie would both be defeated by the superbreaker in their matches.
Taylor Vyskocil (Ashland, Wis.) in the No. 6 spot, would fall in the tiebreaker with scores 1-6, 6-6, (5-0).

The Saints will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action when they face Macalester College on Friday (Feb. 10). Play is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
