Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Riley Versich

Women’s Tennis Falls to Bennies, Oles

OWATONNA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team came away empty handed this past weekend on the road versus two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponents in the College of Saint Benedict (CSB) Duluth Saturday and Saint Olaf college on Sunday.

The Saints faced a tough task as most players had to move up a spot in the lineup both days due to their #2 singles player not available to play this weekend. CSS dropped the dual match to Saint Ben's 0-9 and the St. Olaf match was decided by a 1-8 final score.

CSS vs CSB

Doubles
The Saints started slowly, unable to claim a point on any of the three doubles courts and down 0-3 heading into the singles portion of play. Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and Mishell Benitez (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Tecnico Particular a Distancia José Martí) made things interesting but ultimately lost by a pair of games 6-8 at the No. 1 line. Chloe Hasbergen (Bemidji, Minn.) and Taylor Vyskocil (Ashland, Wis.) also dropped their match closely, 6-8 at the No. 3 doubles spot.

Singles
In singles play, the Saints were ousted on all 6 of the singles courts. Mishell Benitez (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Tecnico Particular a Distancia José Martí) had looks at set point in her first set on court No. 2 but fell 6-7 (5-7), 1-6.

At the No. 4 line Katia Bartels (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View HS) battled her way into a third set superbreaker but couldn't close the deal, going down in a closely contested 6-4, 4-6, 0-1(4-10) fashion.

CSS vs St. Olaf

Doubles
The Saints would find themselves in a similar position to Saturday going down 0-3 in the doubles leg. The closet match was on court No. 1 with MIAC player of the week Maier and her partner Benitez going down 5-8.

The #2 and #3 doubles courts fought hard but came away empty handed with matching 4-8, 4-8 scorelines.

Singles
In singles play the Saints would not be able to turn the tables on the Oles taking back only 1 of the 9 available points.

The lone Saints point would come on court No. 5 after Katia cruised to a 6-0,6-2 victory over her Ole opponent.

Up Next
The Saints will return to the metro area for non-conference action against a former UMAC counterpart in Northwestern and Iowa school Simpson College. Play is slated to begin in Bloomington at 11:30 a.m. beginning with the Eagles followed by Simpson at 3.
