MOORHEAD, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team returned to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action tonight as they faced off against Concordia College-Moorhead at the Moorhead Sports Center.
How it Happened
The first period performance saw no goal-scoring, even with both teams having opportunities to score on power-plays. The Cobbers would outshoot the Saints in the first 9-6.
The second period would once be a battle between both squads going back and forth, Concordia couldn't connect with two power-play chances, and neither could the Saints with their one opportunity. It wasn't until 1:35 seconds remaining, Senior Forward Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) would strike first for the Saints, her third on the season. Allie Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) would be credited for the assist. CSS was up 1-0.
Jessie Ketola (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelly HS) would win the faceoff for the Saints after the goal, and a mere twenty-one seconds later the Saints would score again. It would be the Freshman Lyndi Schubert (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) who would score her first career goal to put the Saints up 2-0. Kayla Kasel (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and LaRoche would have the assists on the score.
The Saints would maintain the lead for the rest of the game, even with the Cobbers pulling their goaltender with just under two minutes to go. They would outshoot the Cobbers in the third 9-8. The Saints improve their win streak to three over the Concordia and will look for the sweep tomorrow.
Goaltending
Ashlea Arvidson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS) was outstanding in the net tonight, as she made every single save for the Saints with 26. While Kiana Flaig had 24 saves out of 26 shots, respectively for the Cobbers.
