ST. PAUL (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team fell to top-seeded and regular season champion University of Northwestern (Minn.) 5-2 on Saturday in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship.
Doubles
The No. 1 doubles team of
Julia Maier (Hamburg, Germany/Heidberg Gymnasium) and
Madilyn Jankila (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) gave the Saints the lead early with a win by a score of 8-2. After the Eagles won at the No. 2 spot, the Saints were tied 6-6 at the No. 3 spot, but Northwestern won the final two games to take the match 8-6.
Singles
The Saints needed to win four of the six singles matches.
The Eagles took the first two singles matches to finish at the No. 5 and 6 spots.
Ava Warren (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) kept the Saints alive with a win at the No. 4 spot by scores of 7-5, 6-1.
Maier and Jankila both won their first sets at the No. 1 and 2 spots and looked to be on their way to victory in their matches, but Northwestern clinched the championship at the No. 3 spot to win 5-2.
End of Season
The Saints finish with an overall record of 7-6. The team does not have a single senior on the squad as it transitions to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) next year.
