csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team swept Crown College for the second time this year on Thursday at Crown Softball Field by scores of 9-0 and 14-5 with sophomore
Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) throwing a no-hitter in game one.
Game 1: CSS 9, Crown 0 (F/5)
The conference game saw the Saints put up five runs in the second inning to later win 9-0 in five innings on the mercy rule.
Rosenthal hit a double in the second inning to knock in the first two runs. She then later scored that inning on
Grace Hadlich's (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) double. Next up to bat was
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) who ended the game with three RBIs, hit a double to advance Hadlich to third and
Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) home making the score 5-0 after the second inning.
In the fourth inning
Mara Seurer (New Prague, Minn./New Prague HS) singled, but advanced to third through extra bases by an error in right field, which allowed Howe and Hadlich to score to make the score 8-0 going into the fifth.
Anders scored one last run in the fifth from a single by Howe. Howe and Hadlich each went 3-for-4 batting and combined for five RBIs.
Rosenthal recorded two strikeouts and faced three over the minimum at 18 batters and walked only two. More importantly, she did not allow a hit in the contest, marking the program's 26
th no-hitter all-time and the first since Maggie Schley's no-no against the University of Minnesota Morris on April 13, 2019
Game 2: CSS 14, Crown 5 (F/6)
The second game of the day saw CSS outscore Crown 14-5. Improving St. Scholastica's record to 17-3 and 2-0 in the UMAC conference.
In the first few innings both teams went back and forth with the lead. Going into the third inning Crown was up 3-2 over the Saints.
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) hit a homer with
Danielle Erickson (International Falls, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) on base. Later that same inning
Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) hit a solo home run to make the score 5-3.
The Saints defense only allowed Crown to score two more runs throughout the next three innings. CSS outscored the Storm 9-2 in those three innings when the game ended in the sixth inning. Errors hurt Crown as they allowed four unearned runs in the last inning.
Howe pitched all six innings for the Saints improving her pitching record to 9-1. She allowed nine hits and struck out seven batters. She only walked two out of the twenty-nine batters she faced. Howe also finished the day with eight RBIs and 6-for-8 batting.
