ST. PAUL (csssaints.com) – The seventh-seeded St. Scholastica women's basketball team hung with second-seeded University of Northwestern (Minn.), but the Eagles proved too much in the second half as the Saints fell 76-54 Thursday night to see their season end in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament quarterfinals.

How It Happened
First-year performer Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) scored the first five points for the Saints to give CSS an early 5-3 lead. However, the Eagles (14-4) then went on an 8-0 run to take a six-point lead. St. Scholastica trailed 20-14 after a quarter of action with Fraze and Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) combining to score all 14 points for the Saints in the period.

A pair of Ramsey Moe (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) free throws got the Northwestern lead down to 28-26 with five minutes to go in the first half. Moe scored six straight points for the Saints in the quarter. A Frase jumper got the margin down to three with under a minute to go in the half, but an Eagles layup late made it 37-32 at the half. The CSS bench had 10 points in the second quarter.

The Eagles opened the second half with 13 straight points to make it an 18-point game. The Saints did not get any closer the rest of the way. The only question was whether Kennedy, a senior, would reach 1,000 points for her career.

Kennedy entered the night 18 points shy of the career milestone and had 12 points after three quarters. She made a jumper two minutes into the fourth quarter to get her within four points. She was then held scoreless until making a pair of free throws with a minute to go. Kennedy needed only two more points and she would finally get it in the final 10 seconds of the game, making a layup to give her exactly 1,000 for her career.

Northwestern went on to win 76-54.

Top Performers
Kennedy finished with team-high 18 points. Frase added 11 points and Moe had a career-high 10 points.

Brooklyn DeKam had 24 points to lead the Eagles. Northwestern moves on to play Bethany Lutheran College in a semifinal contest on Saturday.
