csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday defeating Illinois Wesleyan University, but fell to McMurry University (Texas) in the nightcap.
CSS 7, Illinois Wesleyan 2
The Saints began the day by winning their first match of 2020. CSS was able to win two of the three doubles matches to begin. The No. 2 team
Syd Holt (Pequot Lakes, Minn. /Pequot Lakes HS) and
Madeline Samz (Burnsville, Minn. /Burnsville HS) won 8-4. The No. 3 team of
Sydney Vyskocil (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) and
Julia Ellefson (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) won 8-6.
In singles play,
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS) won 6-1, 6-3 at the No.1 spot. Holt rallied from a set down to win 4-6, 6-4, (10-5) at the No. 2 position.
Madilyn Jankila (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) prevailed at the No. 3 spot 6-2, 7-5.
At No. 5
Maria Valentini (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and at No. 6
Anna Roberts (Victoria, Minn. /Chanhassen HS) each blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0.
McMurry 7, CSS 1
The Saints were only able to manage one win in the nightcap against McMurry.
The No. 2 doubles team of Holt and Samz were the only victors by an 8-6 margin. The dual did not finish due to the lights at the facility being turned off.
