DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team welcomed the University of Northwestern (Minn.) to The Reif for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup on Saturday evening. The Saints kept the game close in the first half only being down by two points heading into halftime, but was outscored 48-33 in the second half to see its season come to an end with a 79-62 defeat.
How It Happened
The Saints dug themselves an early 5-0 deficit before
Kaela Huber (Washburn, Wis./Ashland HS (Northland)) made a tough layup to get the scoring going for St. Scholastica. An Eagle layup extended the lead to 7-2.
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) would follow up the next two possessions with a bucket to bring the game within one, 7-6. The final six minutes of the first quarter would be dominated by Northwestern (16-9, 12-4 UMAC) going on a 14-3 run to go into the quarter break up 21-9.
CSS started the first two minutes of the second quarter on an 8-0 run to bring the game within four points at 21-17. The Saints got within four points once again at 25-21 and within three points following a
Karli Skog (Crosslake, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS (Jamestown)) three pointer, 27-24. The Eagles extended their lead back up to seven points with just under three minutes left in the quarter. Five straight points for the Saints to close out the half would bring the Northwestern lead down to two points heading into halftime holding a slim 31-29 lead.
Northwestern came out of the halftime break on a 12-2 run to extend the lead to 45-31. St. Scholastica responded with a 12-4 run in the next two minutes to bring the score within six, 49-43. However, Northwestern would once again extend their lead to 10 going into the fourth quarter, 55-45.
The Saints would lose steam in the fourth quarter being unable to come back from the 10-point deficit to start the quarter. St. Scholastica would go onto lose the game 79-62, ending the Saints season.
Top Performers
Skog led the Saints in scoring with 15 points. Kennedy and
Morgan Anderson (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS (UW-Superior)) each chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively, in the loss. Anderson also led the team in rebounds with eight on the night.
End of Season
The Saints finish with an overall record 9-16 and 7-9 in conference play. They will say goodbye to two players in sisters
Alison Huber (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS (Hibbing CC)) and
Kaela Huber (Washburn, Wis./Ashland HS (Northland)).
