csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team welcomed University of Wisconsin-Superior to The Reif for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup on Wednesday night. The Saints kept the game within reach despite numerous Yellowjacket runs. Superior came out in the fourth quarter scoring 14 straight points to seal the deal and defeat the Saints 73-54.
How It Happened
The Saints got on the board with
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) drawing and converting an and-one to tie the game up 3-3 early in the first quarter. CSS held tight with UWS before an 11-1 run in the final 3:23 of the quarter would boost the Yellowjackets (15-7, 11-2 UMAC) lead to 19-8.
Buckets by Kennedy and
Christina Furey (Lake Charles, La./Homeschooled) trimmed the Saints' deficit to single digits, 21-12. The Yellowjackets went on a 13-2 run in the next three and a half minutes to open up a 34-14 lead. CSS closed out the remaining two and a half minutes of the quarter on a 9-4 run to bring the score to 38-23 heading into the halftime break.
Superior would extend its lead to as large as 18 with two minutes left in the third quarter. St. Scholastica responded with a 9-0 run in the remaining two minutes of the quarter to bring the Yellowjacket lead down to single digits, 51-42 heading into the fourth quarter.
CSS would be unable to bring their third quarter momentum into the fourth quarter giving up a 14-0 run out of the gates to fall behind 65-42. Furey and
Karli Skog (Crosslake, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS (Jamestown)) would score eight of the Saints 12 points in the quarter. The Saints would fall to UW-Superior 73-54.
Top Performers
Kennedy led the Saints with 17 points and Skog followed behind with 13 points.
Emma Schmidt (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) and Furey held down the boards with six rebounds apiece. Furey and
Alison Huber (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS (Hibbing CC)) recorded three assists in the loss.
