Women’s Basketball Hosts Northwestern in Important Matchup

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team will host an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) game with postseason implications against the University of Northwestern (Minn.) Saturday for Alumni Day.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-The Saints are coming off a thrilling come-from-behind win over Finlandia University (Mich.) on Wednesday and are now on a two-game winning streak.
-In the win over the Lions, the Saints trailed for the first 37:09 of the game and stole the lead late and never gave it up.
-Senior Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) led the scoring for CSS dropping 14 points, while a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
-Senior Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had another dominating game in the paint for CSS, she set the program record of eight blocks in a game. She tied it earlier this season with seven.
-Cieluch also set the single-season program record for blocks, becoming the first Saint to reach 60 in a year.
-Cieluch ranks first in the conference with 60 blocked shots, 2.9 per game. Her 7.9 rebounds rank third in the conference.
-Sophomore Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per game.
-Kennedy's 83.3 free throw percentage leads the team and is third in the conference.
-Walther is averaging 12.0 points per game.
-Walther has scored in double-figures in eight straight games.
-This is a must-win game for a Saints team fighting for a UMAC Tournament spot. With three games to go they're currently sitting 2.0 games outside the playoff picture and chasing Northwestern who currently occupies the fifth spot.
-CSS will be eliminated from postseason contention with a loss.
 
What You Need to Know about Northwestern:
Overall Record: 10-12, 7-6 UMAC
-The Eagles are 2-3 in their last five games are coming off an 81-59 loss to top ranked University of Wisconsin-Superior.
-The Eagles have failed to score 60 in the last 4-of-5 games.
-The Eagles are sixth in the UMAC holding opponents to just 34.7 percent from the floor.
-They also rank 12th in NCAA Division III with 123 blocked shots, 5.9 per game.
-Rio Landers is second in the conference with 43 blocked shots.
-Amy Berglund leads the team in scoring, averaging 11.0 points per game.
-Berglund and Jordan Sauve ranks second in the conference with 2.3 steals-per-game.
-Kelsea Lund averages 10.3 points per game and is second the UMAC making 41 percent of 3-point attempts, while being third in the league in 3-point field goals made (54).
-The Eagles clinch a postseason spot with a win.

Series History: The Eagles ended St. Scholastica's season last year in the UMAC Tournament First Round. Northwestern has won eight of the last 10 games … However, CSS won last year's meeting at The Reif.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints will head over to Ashland, Wisconsin for their final road game of the regular season on Wednesday against Northland College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
