MARQUETTE, Mich. (
csssaints.com) – After recording a pair of shutout wins and putting up 26 runs Saturday night at the Finlandia University (Mich.) Dome Classic, the St. Scholastica softball team suffered a pair of one-run defeats on Sunday to close the classic, surrendering late leads in each.
Finlandia 6, CSS 5
The Saints trailed 4-2 entering the sixth, but scored three runs to take a 5-4 lead. Unfortunately, the host Lions (1-2) plated two in the top of the seventh to win 6-5.
CSS sent two runs across in the bottom of the first with a RBI double from
Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) and a RBI single from
Toni Bishop (Roseville, Minn./Roseville HS) to give the Saints a 2-0 lead, which they held until the top of the fourth. In the fourth, the first six Finlandia batters reached base safely in the inning and was able to send three runs across to take a 3-2 lead.
After the Lions added a run in the fifth inning, the Saints put together a two-out rally in the sixth trailing 4-2.
Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Bishop started the rally with back-to-back ground-rule doubles. Later in the inning, a misplay off the bat of
Krysta Felber (Rogers, Minn./Rogers HS) allowed Bishop and
Sydney Plemel (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) to score to give the Saints a 5-4 lead.
Finlandia started the top of the seventh with a triple to right field. After a walk, the Lions had another ball hit to the outfield that would get past the Saints and roll to the fence, allowing the tying run to score. A hit thru the left side allowed the eventual game-winning run to score as the Saints fell 6-5.
Bishop went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Schley added two hits and a RBI. Schley did pick up the loss in relief.
Marian 8, CSS 7
The final game of the classic for the Saints saw Marian push five runs across in the top of the seventh to rally past CSS 8-7.
After the Sabres (3-0) scored two runs in the top of the third,
Hannah Thul (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) led off the bottom frame with a triple. She later scored on a double steal to make it 2-1. St. Scholastica took its first lead of the game in the fourth inning with another two-out rally.
Nicole Anders (Port Angeles, Wash./Sequim HS) began the rally by being hit-by-pitch. Two batters later Schley drove in Anders with a single and then Thul scored off a Marian error to make it 3-2.
The Sabres tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the Saints responded once again. Plemel led off with a ground-rule double. After an Anders single, Schley drove in two runs with a double to make it 5-3.
However, just like the first game of the day, the Saints could not get the final three outs they needed to get the win. The Sabres scored five runs on five hits to take an 8-5 lead.
CSS attempted to respond in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly by
Lily Kagan (Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service HS) and a RBI single by Anders. The tying run though would be left stranded as the Saints fell 8-7.
Anders led the Saints offensive, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Not to be out-done, Schley was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. She also had six strikeouts in the loss in the pitcher's circle.
