DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – In the final game of the regular season, the St. Scholastica women's hockey team defeated Lake Forest College (Ill.) by a score of 2-0 Saturday evening at Mars Lakeview Arena to sweep the Foresters during the regular season for the first time in program history.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first period in which they had to kill one penalty, the Saints opened the scoring with 9:37 left in the second period.
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS), who initially was credited with the game-winner last night, but later changed to
Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) after further review, made sure she got the credit on Saturday scoring her first of the night via an assist by
Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) and Anderson. The Saints had to go on the penalty kill once again shortly after scoring, but were able to limit the Foresters (14-6-5, 11-3-4 NCHA) to just two shots on goal. Shots on goal at the end of the period finished 12-5 in favor of LFC.
The Saints' second goal came once again through Thompson, Klaas and Anderson. Klaas and Anderson set up Thompson with 7:36 left in the game to make it 2-0 CSS.
With five minutes left on the clock, CSS had to go on the penalty kill for a two-minute minor. The Saints only gave up two shots on goal, both of which were saved by
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)). In the final three minutes, Thomeczek came up with four big saves to keep the score at 2-0. Shots on goal at the end of the third finished 14-13 in favor of LFC.
Top Performers for CSS
Thomeczek's 40 saves extends her single-season record of shutouts to six. She records shutouts in back-to-back games for the second time this season. Anderson now has 28 assists this season, two shy of tying the single-season program record.
Top Performers for the Opponent
Jacque Rogers stopped 27 of the 29 shots she faced in goal for the Foresters.

The Saints (18-6-1, 15-3-0 NCHA) will host the NCHA Slaats Cup quarterfinals next Friday and Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena against Concordia University Wisconsin. Puck-drop for both games is set for 7 p.m.
