MORRIS, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team won the first set, but could not keep the momentum going, dropping the next three sets to see its season end with a four-set loss to the University of Minnesota Morris in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Semifinal Wednesday night.
How It Happened
The first set started out very back and forth with neither team grasping a solid lead until a small run by Morris would put them up 11-7. Two straight kills by
Morgan Lohmiller (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes HS) would bring the Morris lead to 14-11. The Lohmiller kills would be energy the Saints needed as they would tie the set up at 15-15, 16-16, and once again at 17-17 before they would hold the lead for the remainder of the set winning 25-19.
The second set began almost identical to the first with both teams trading off points. St. Scholastica would make a mini run to go up 12-7, but Morris would make a run for themselves and create a small cushion but that would be enough to hold the Saints off for the rest of the set winning 25-20 to tie up the match at 1-1.
The Cougars would come out strong early with a 10-2 lead in the third set. The Saints would go on a run to bring them within five at 13-8, but that was the smallest lead for Morris before they would finish the set with a 25-14 win to go up in the match 2-1.
The Saints once again found themselves down early in the fourth set with three straight points out of the gates from Morris. The smallest deficit the Saints would be able to muster up was two at 5-3. Morris dominated the fourth set winning 25-15 to win the match 3-1.
