Volleyball Sweeps Martin Luther to Begin UMAC Second Half

Notables
-Schermann eclipses 500 career kills
-CSS is 7-0 when it wins the first set this season

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team avenged an earlier loss this season to Martin Luther College, by sweeping the Knights Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium.

How it Happened
When the Saints fell to Martin Luther earlier this month in New Ulm, the Saints were the first team to 23 in three of the four sets. However, the Knights were the team that won in four over the Saints. That would not be the case on Saturday.

Martin Luther led early in the first set, but the Saints went on a 7-2 run to take a lead it would not relinquish. CSS led 23-16 in the first set, but just like in New Ulm, Martin Luther battled back and got within 24-23 before a Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) kill gave the Saints a 25-23 set win. Tatum Swanson (Carlton, Minn./Wrenshall HS) had six of the team's 14 kills in the set.

The Knights (4-15, 4-5 UMAC) held a narrow margin over the Saints for much of the second set and led 19-17 late. However, back-to-back kills by Schermann followed by a MLC error gave the Saints a 20-19 lead. With the score at 20-20, CSS recorded five of the last six points to take a two-set lead at 25-21. Schermann had six kills in the set.

The third set was all Saints from the onset, scoring the first six points. St. Scholastica maintained that margin the rest of the way and finished out the sweep of the Knights 25-16. Sofia Rajala (Deer River, Minn./Greenway HS) had four kills in the set.

Top Performers
The Saints showed great offensive balance with Schermann, Emily Bounds (Hill City, Minn./Hill City HS) and Swanson all recording 10 kills. Kelsi Rippberger (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had 21 assists and Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) had a team-high 15 digs.

Up Next
The Saints (7-10, 5-4 UMAC) will welcome Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior to the Reif for the second time this season on Tuesday with the match beginning at 7 p.m. The first time the teams met, UWS edged the Saints in five sets.
