ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team dropped both of its matches Friday night at the Bethel University Invite.
Luther 3, CSS 1
The Saints opened the night with a four-set loss to Luther College (Iowa). The Norse (7-3) had a hitting percentage of over .300 in each of the first two sets.
In the opening set, the Saints trailed only by a point at 21-20, but the Norse recorded the final four points to take the set 25-20. The second set was back-and-forth, but CSS opened up some cushion with four straight points to take a 22-18 lead. The Saints then led 23-20, but Luther scored four consecutive points to regain the lead. CSS fought off two set points, but the Norse prevailed in their third attempt, winning 27-25.
St. Scholastica battled in the third set, jumping out to a 9-3 lead. Luther got back it in, but the Saints would force a fourth set with a 25-17 set three win. The fourth set was all Luther with an attack percentage of .733. The Norse closed out the match with a 25-9 victory.
Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) led the Saints with a season-high 18 kills.
Emily Bounds (Hill City, Minn./Hill City HS) added 12 kills.
Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) had 21 assists with
Kelsi Rippberger (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) adding 16 assists.
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) led the team with 16 digs.
Bethel 3, CSS 0
The Saints lost the nightcap to host Bethel University in three sets.
The Royals (9-2) never trailed in the first set to win 25-18. CSS held a brief lead in set two, but once again Bethel went up two sets by a score of 25-16. CSS then trailed 20-9 in set three, but responded with an 8-1 run to cut the margin to four. The Saints got within 24-22, but the Royals closed the match with a kill and a 25-22 set three win.
Schermann had 17 kills to once again lead the Saints and finish with 35 kills for the night. Schermann also led the team with 12 digs. Austvold had 18 assists.

The Saints (2-6) open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play tomorrow when they head to New Ulm, Minnesota to face Crown College at 2 p.m. and Martin Luther College at 4 p.m.
