CLAREMONT, Calif. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team won its final match of the Pacific Coast Classic to gain a split on Saturday.

Cal Lutheran 3, CSS 0
The Saints recorded 30 kills, but it wasn't enough as the Regals (3-0) defeated CSS in three sets.

Cal Lutheran did not trail in the first two sets, but the Saints were right there in set two tied at 21-21, but the Regals recorded three straight points and held on to win 25-23. The Saints led early in set three, before Cal Lutheran went on a 9-1 run to pull away.

Junior Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) led the Saints for the third straight match with nine kills. Emily Bounds (Hill City, Minn./Hill City HS) added eight kills. Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) had 15 assists and Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) added 10 digs.

Paris Dosch had nine kills to lead the Regals.

CSS 3, Union 2
In their final match in California, the Saints outlasted the Dutchwomen (1-3) in five sets to earn the first victory of 2018.

The Saints led for much of the opening set, but it was an 8-1 run late that sealed it. Freshman Haley Rohwer's (Arlington, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) kill gave the Saints a 25-19 first set win.

CSS fell behind 11-3 in the second set and attempted to battle back, but came up just short, falling 25-23. In the pivotal third set, the Saints took a 6-3 lead thanks to back-to-back service aces by Thompson. With the set tied at 17-17, CSS scored four consecutive points to take a 21-17 lead. A Schermann kill then gave the Saints a 25-23 set win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

However, Union would not lay down as it responded by taking the fourth set 25-22. In the fifth-and-deciding set, St. Scholastica scored the first three points with a pair of kills by Bounds and another by Tatum Swanson (Carlton, Minn./Wrenshall HS). They would extend the lead to 10-3 and a Schermann kill ended the match at 15-9 to give CSS the victory.

Sophomore Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) and Swanson each recorded 15 kills to lead the Saints. Schermann finished with 14 kills. Austvold had 32 assists, while freshman Ellie Greenwaldt (Raymond, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian School) added 26 assists. Thompson had 14 digs and Swanson also led the team with six blocks.
