csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica women's basketball team defeated Martin Luther College by a score of 58-49 on Saturday at Reif Gymnasium.

The Saints opened the scoring with a layup by
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS). The Knights (5-17, 3-10 UMAC) took their only lead of the game after a bucket by Jade St. Germaine three minutes into contest. A
Rashonna Thomas (Minneapolis, Minn./Columbia Heights HS (Anoka-Ramsey CC)) 3-pointer gave the Saints the lead back. CSS led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was the up-and-down action with CSS shooting 53 percent in the period. St. Scholastica led by as much as eight, but the Knights went on a 9-2 run at the end of the half to tie the game at 30-30. A
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) layup in the final seconds gave the Saints a 32-30 halftime lead.

The Saints opened the second half scoring 11 of the first 13 points to extend the lead to 11.
Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) had five of those 11 points. CSS led 50-40 after three quarters.Â
Neither team made a field goal in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Saints extended their lead to 14 with three minutes remaining. Martin Luther went on a five-point run in the final minutes, but it was not enough. The game ended 58-49 in favor of the Saints.

VanKempen led the Saints in scoring with 13, while Thomas had 12. VanKempen also had a team-high eight rebounds.
