ST. PAUL, Minn. (
csssaints.com) -- The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was defeated by the University of Northwestern (Minn.) by a score of 53-47 on Saturday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action.
The Action
CSS opened the scoring of the game on a pair of
Sam Brannen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) free throws. The Saints then went on an 8-0 in the latter half of the quarter to take an 8-point lead. The Saints led 15-9 after the first 10 minutes of play.
The Eagles (12-11, 8-6 UMAC) earned their first lead three minutes into the second quarter after a six-point run. CSS regained its lead after a pair of free throws by
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS), before Northwestern snatched it back off a jumper. But the Saints took back the lead after a six-point run with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter. St. Scholastica led 26-23 at the half.
The third quarter would be the difference in the game. The Eagles shot 75 percent from the floor in the period and gained the lead minutes into the half after a 7-4 run, but the Saints answered quickly with a 3-pointer by VanKempen to make it 33-32 in favor of CSS. The Eagles responded with a 3-pointer of their own to regain the lead and were then able to extend their lead to six points going into the final quarter.
The Saints fought to level the scoring in the fourth quarter and got within three on few occasions, but were unable to do so and the game finished 53-47 in favor of Northwestern.
Top Performers for CSS
Rashonna Thomas (Minneapolis, Minn./Columbia Heights HS (Anoka-Ramsey CC)) led the Saints in scoring with 14 points.
Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) led in rebounds with a career-high 12, while VanKempen had nine.
Top Performers for Northwestern
Taryn Tumbleson led three Eagles that reached double figures with 14 points.
