MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team won its final two matches of the regular season against Crown College and North Central University (Minn.) on Wednesday and, in doing so, clinched a spot in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament.

CSS 3, Crown 0
The Saints began the day by heading to St. Bonifacius to face Crown (3-25, 2-14 UMAC).

Crown opened up with the first two points of the night in set one.  However, the Saints answered with a few points of their own.  The majority of the first set would follow this fashion as the lead was continuously exchanged between teams. Though, three consecutive errors from the Storm kick started a 13-2 Saints run late in the set that would guide them to a 25-16 win.

The Saints dominated set two from the start.  After receiving the first two points of the set, they went on an early 10-1 run sparked by kills throughout the line-up.  St. Scholastica would keep at least a nine-point spread for the remainder of the set to win 25-15.

Set three gave the Storm a promising lead to start, but the Saints' offense was relentless.  Down 7-5, Madissen Burns (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) and Emily Udermann (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) stepped up with two kills that initiated a 10-2 run.  Crown was unable to overcome the deficit and handed the third and final set to the Saints at 25-16 for the sweep.

Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) led the Saints in digs (12) and assists (22). Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) added 10 digs and 10 kills. Sofia Rajala (Deer River, Minn./Greenway HS) tallied nine kills in the match.

CSS 3, NCU 0
After defeating Crown, the Saints traveled from the Western Twin Cities suburb to downtown Minneapolis to face North Central (5-23, 1-13 UMAC) to wrap up the day.

North Central led early in the first set, but multiple kills from Udermann, Bounds, and Schermann instigated a 10-1 run for the Saints that put them ahead 16-8. CSS would not relinquish its lead for what was left of the set.

The Saints jumped out to a 14-3 lead in set two and commanded the rest of the set with an unstoppable offense for the 25-9 victory.

Set three, unlike the first two, consisted of much back-and-forth play. The Saints led the whole set, but only by a few points. It was not until their end-of-set 9-1 run that they were able to pull away. The match ended at 25-15 to grant St. Scholastica its second sweep of the night.

Schermann and Bounds posted 10 kills a-piece for the Saints.  Austvold had a team-high 16 assists and Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) led the team with nine digs.
