SUPERIOR, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team recorded its third split in five days on Tuesday, falling to Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior in four sets, but defeating Northland College in three sets at the Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
UW-Superior 3, CSS 1
The Saints were looking to defeat their rivals in Superior for the first time since the 2009 season, but came up short dropping their fourth straight match against the Yellowjackets at the Mertz.
UWS took the first two sets by identical 25-21 scores. The first set, the score was tied at 20-20, but the 'jackets registered five kills to close out the set. CSS led the second set 16-14, but Superior responded with a 10-3 run to take a two-set lead.
The Saints made sure they wouldn't be swept, winning the third set 25-15.
Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and
Emily Bounds (Hill City, Minn./Hill City HS) each had four kills in the set.
St. Scholastica then led for much of the fourth set. The Saints were in front 17-14, but UWS recorded six of the next seven points to take its first lead of the set. CSS tied it at 20-20, but just like the first set, the Yellowjackets recorded five of the final six points to win 25-21.
Brooke Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) led the way with a career-high 13 kills. Bounds added 11 kills.
Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) recorded a career-high 46 assists.
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) had a team-high 19 digs, while Schermann added 17 digs.
CSS 3, Northland 0
The Saints bounced back with a three-set win over the LumberJills. It was the 44
th straight victory over Northland, including the 14
th straight sweep.
