Women's Hockey Scores 10 Again to Complete Sweep

HANCOCK, Mich. (csssaints.com) --- The St. Scholastica women's hockey team crushed Finlandia University (Mich.) 10-3 Saturday afternoon. CSS has scored at least seven goals in 11 of the 18 meetings against the Lions.

First Period
In the first 12 seconds, Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) scored with assists by Emily Stegora (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS (Minnesota State-Mankato)) and Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS). A minute later, Stegora and Klaas would assist to Hanowski to widen the St. Scholastica lead to 2-0. Three minutes later and only four minutes into the period, Stegora would score, with help from Klaas and Paige Forsman (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS), to put the Saints at 3-0.

Soon after, a minor penalty would be called on the Lions for hooking, giving CSS a power play opportunity. St. Scholastica took full advantage a minute into the one player advantage. Amanda Broman (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East HS), assisted by Kennedy Houge (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray HS), slid the puck past the Finlandia goaltender to bump the CSS lead to 4-0.

Eight minutes into the period, Finlandia would finally gain enough momentum to score twice within three minutes, shortening the Saints lead to 4-2.

With two minutes left, Klaas would score twice within sixteen seconds to widen the lead to 6-2. Hanowski and Stegora assisted both goals. St. Scholastica would fight hard to get another quick goal, but time would run out and the score would be 6-2 going into the second period.

Second Period
A minute into the second period, Finlandia would score another goal, putting the score 6-3. Kaleigh Hamann (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), with help from Anja Kadijevic (Zagreb, Croatia/General HS (Lindenwood)), would quickly respond to the Finlandia goal by scoring one of their own to put the Saints ahead 7-3. Four minutes later, Klaas and Hanowski would assist Stegora for her second goal of the game, bumping the Saints up to 8-3.

A minor penalty would be called on the Saints for checking with 10 minutes to go in the period, give Finlandia a power play opportunity. Finlandia would be able to get a few shots on CSS goaltender Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)), but St. Scholastica would be able to successfully kill off the penalty.

With five minutes left in the period, another penalty would be called on St. Scholastica. Finlandia would only have a short power play however as two minor penalties would be called on the Lions. Both teams would fight hard to score, but the period would end without either team being able to score. The score would be 8-3 going into the third period.

Third Period
In this first minute, Abby Sawyer (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS), assisted by Mac Johnson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS (St. Cloud State)), scored for the Saints, bumping up the score to 9-3. Six minutes later, a penalty would be called on Finlandia for hooking. St. Scholastica would be able to get three shots on the power-play, but would not be able to score. However, Kadijevic, with help from Forsman and Broman, would break through and score 14 seconds after the power-play was over, pushing the score to a final of 10-3.

Top Performers
Johnson led CSS in shots on goal with six. Broman and Sawyer each had five. Klaas shot four, and recorded her second hat trick in two games.

For goaltending, St. Scholastica's Thomeczek saved 26 out of 30 shots she faced to earn the win. Finlandia's Breanna Merriam stopped 28 out of 38 shots.

Up Next
The Saints will be on the road at Lake Forest College (Ill.) for the NCHA Slaats Cup semifinals next weekend. Game date and time is to be determined.
