csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was out-scored 24-8 in the first quarter in its loss to Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior on Wednesday night in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener for both teams.
Early Runs for UWS
The Saints led 5-2 after the opening two minutes following a 3-pointer by
Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) and a pair of free throws by
Sam Brannen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS). However, the Saints had only one more field goal the rest of quarter as the Yellowjackets (5-2, 1-0 UMAC) finished the period scoring 22 of the next 25 points to lead 24-8.
UWS led by as much as 20 two minutes into the second quarter. The 'jackets had two 8-0 runs and a 10-0 run in a 10 minute span in the first half. The Yellowjackets led 43-22 at the half.
CSS Responds with Strong Third Period
St. Scholastica came out of the locker room and put up 21 points in the third quarter to cut the margin to 10 at the end of the quarter.
Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS) scored nine points in the period as the Saints had a 12-2 run at one point with six points coming from
Chelsea Swatek (Cromwell, Minn./Cromwell HS).
UWS Closes it Out
Superior scored seven of the first nine points of the fourth quarter to extend the lead back to 15. UWS later used an 8-0 run to put the game on ice and win by a final of 74-55.
Top Performances for CSS
Kennedy led the Saints off the bench with a season-high 15 points. Brannen had 11 points and three steals.
Chelsea Swatek (Cromwell, Minn./Cromwell HS) had a season-high 10 points.
Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Top Performances for the Opponent
Hailey Kontny led four Yellowjackets in double figures with 15 points. She also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for a double-double and recorded five steals.
