St. Ben’s Uses Big Second Quarter to Get Past Saints

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The College of Saint Benedict went on an 18-0 run from the end of the first quarter to the start of the second quarter and out-scored the Saints 26-9 in the second quarter en route to a 81-48 victory on Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium.
 
The Action
The Blazers (10-1) jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the opening five minutes. The Saints responded with a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 13-12 with two minutes to go in the first period. Rashonna Thomas (Minneapolis, Minn./Columbia Heights HS (Anoka-Ramsey CC)) scored five of the 10 points during that span.
 
However, the Saints would not make another field goal until there was five minutes left in the second quarter and between the two field goals, Saint Benedict went on an 18-0 run to hold a 31-12 advantage.
 
The Saints went on a 15-3 run in the third quarter, but only got as close as 19. The Blazers led by as much as 34 before winning by a final of 81-48.
 
Top Performances for CSS
Chelsea Swatek (Cromwell, Minn./Cromwell HS) was the lone Saint in double-figures with 10 points. She also grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Thomas added seven points and four steals.
 
Top Performances for the Opponent
Sidney Schiffler led four Blazers in double-figures with 14 points. Kate Banovetz had 12 points, Niki Fokken 11 points and Chelsey Guetter with 10 points.

The Saints (4-6) are back in action tomorrow at the Reif Gymnasium as they close out 2017 by hosting Concordia College-Moorhead at 1 p.m.
