COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team defeated Sul Ross State University (Texas) 65-53 on Saturday in the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by Colorado College.
 
Saints Dominate Early
The Saints out-scored the Lobos (0-4) 22-7 in the first period. Sul Ross State made just two field goals in the quarter. Zoe Bystrom (Cook, Minn./North Woods HS (Hibbing CC)) had six points off the bench in the quarter. Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) and Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) each added five points each.
 
A VanKempen bucket gave the Saints a 31-7 lead with seven minutes to go in the first half. CSS led 38-23 at the half.
 
The Lobos went on a 12-0 from the end of the second quarter to the beginning of the third quarter to cut the St. Scholastica lead to 38-30. However, the Saints quickly got the margin back to double digits where it remained the rest of the third quarter.
 
The lead climbed back to 21 in the fourth quarter before the Saints closed out the Lobos 65-53.
 
Top Performances for CSS
Bystrom recorded a career-high 16 points off the bench to lead the Saints. Walther finished with 11 points and VanKempen with 10 points. Danielle Cieluch (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had a team-high five assists.
 
Top Performances for the Opponent
Angalyn Latin led the Lobos with 14 points.

The Saints (3-1) will be at Saint Mary's University on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
