csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team fell to rival University of Wisconsin-Superior for the second time this season in four sets at the Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The Action
The opening set saw the Saints take an early lead, but the Yellowjackets went on a 5-1 run and CSS would not get the lead again, dropping the first set 25-20.
The Saints trailed 9-5 in the second set, but after a timeout they went on a 12-5 run to take a 17-14 lead. St. Scholastica led 18-16 and seemed poised to even the match, however the 'jackets recorded the next four points, including back-to-back service aces to take a 20-18 lead. CSS would tie it again at 20-20, but Superior held off the charge and took a two-set lead 25-23.
UWS looked to be on its way to sweeping the Saints, leading 17-12 in the third set, but CSS responded by scoring six of the next seven points to tie it at 18-18. The Saints then took the lead after back-to-back Superior errors. A pair of kills by
Brooke Elvehjem (Mora, Minn./Mora HS) gave the Saints the third set 25-21.
With the momentum on St. Scholastica's side, the Saints had an early lead in set four. UWS answered and the set went back-and-forth. With the Saints ahead 16-15, the 'jackets squashed any hope CSS had of a rally by ending the set on a 10-2 run to take the match 25-18.
Notable Performances
Elvehjem led the Saints with 11 kills.
Emily Bounds (Hill City, Minn./Hill City HS) added 10 kills.
Christaia Houser (Esko, Minn./Homeschool) had eight kills and seven blocks.
Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) had 24 assists and
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) registered 22 digs.
Brylee Colligan led the Yellowjackets with 15 kills.
