Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) scored both of the St. Scholastica women's hockey team's goals Friday night, including the game-winner with 11 minutes remaining to lift the Saints past Marian University (Wis.) 2-1.
Saints in Front after One
It was a relatively quiet first period of action as the Saints killed off the only power-play of the period. The first goal came with 1:27 remaining in the period when Klaas scored an unassisted goal to give the Saints the 1-0 lead. Klaas would also strike a pipe in the second period.
Thomeczek Allows a Goal
After a scoreless second period, the Sabres tied the contest at 1-1 over seven minutes into the third period. Nine seconds into a St. Scholastica power-play Ally Fox scored a short-handed goal. It was the first goal allowed by CSS goaltender
Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) in the last 258 minutes of play.
Klaas with the Winner
Less than two minutes later, 95 seconds later exactly, Klaas converted on that same power-play to put CSS back in front for good at 2-1.
Sierra Hanowski (Warroad, Minn./Warroad HS) and
Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) had the assists.
Thomeczek made a couple saves with the Marian net empty in the final minute to preserve the 2-1 victory.
Goaltending
Thomeczek finished with 26 saves to improve to 5-0-0 on the year. Lindsey Strainis had 27 saves in the loss for Marian.
