DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com)- The St. Scholastica women's hockey team hosted and shut down St. Norbert College 1-0 in a conference game Friday night. CSS is now 4-0-1 in its last five home games against the Green Knights.
The Action
In the first period, a Saints player received a five-minute major penalty for boarding within the first minute, creating an early setback. CSS was able to hold back SNC during the five minutes, allowing only three shots on goal.
With eight minutes left to go in the period, Emily Stegora (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS (Minnesota State-Mankato)) was able to sneak the puck behind the St. Norbert goalie for the first goal of the game. This was her eighth goal of the season. The period would end at 1-0, with the Saints behind in shots. St. Scholastica only had three shots on goal, while St. Norbert had 13. For faceoffs, CSS was also behind, winning only four out of 15.
To start the second, SNC received a minor penalty within the first minute of the period, giving CSS a power play. The Saints would be unable to score off of a few opportunities, but would get another power play with 30 seconds left to go in the period. CSS would be unable to score here as well. The power-play would carry over into the third period, and the score of 1-0 would also carry over. Looking at shots, they were low for both teams. St. Scholastica had six while SNC had four.
In the third period, CSS was unable to score off the power play that carried over from the second period. The Saints would then would have to kill off several attempts during the period where St. Norbert pulled their goalie to give them an extra player on the ice. Attempts to score by both teams were unsuccessful, and the game would end in the Saints' favor 1-0. CSS had seven shots this period while St. Norbert had a little under half that with three.
Goaltending
Freshman Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) earned her second straight shutout as she stopped all 21 shots she faced. Brianna Kelly had 14 saves for the Green Knights.
