ST. PAUL (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica volleyball team came into Saturday 1-1 in the University of Northwestern's Labor Day tournament, but soon were defeated by both Coe College (Iowa) in the morning and the University of Wisconsin-Stout in the afternoon to finish 1-3.
Coe 3, CSS 0
The Saints began the day suffering their first defeat in three sets of the season against the Kohawks.
Coe got an early lead in the first set, with the Saints trailing on the Kohawks' heels, only a few points behind. The Saints were able to maintain a short lead after a kill from
Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), bringing the score to 19-18. However, the Saints were not able to hold onto this lead and dropped the set 25-23.
In the second set, CSS scored the first point but struggled the rest of the way and lost 25-14, dropping another set to make the match score 2-0.
The Kohawks held a slight lead throughout the third set, pulling away from the Saints after tying for the last time at 5-5. After a kill from Coe, CSS lost 25-20.
Amanda Belden (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) led the Saints with 10 kills;
Alex Barsody (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) led the team with 16 digs.
Emily Kessler (Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway HS (Itasca CC)) had the most assists in this match, with 17.
UW-Stout 3, CSS 0
The Saints took another tough loss to the Blue Devils, losing in three sets again to wrap up play.
CSS took a quick 1-0 lead in the first set, but were soon overtaken by Stout. After trailing by as much as seven points, the Saints were able to tie up the score at 18-18. The lead went back-and-forth, until the game eventually was tied again at 25-25. The Saints would have three set points, unfortunately, Stout scored three consecutive points to take the set, 29-27.
Stout took an early lead in the second set, and the Saints were unable to turn the set around. The set ended with a score of 25-19. The third set reflected the second, with Stout taking the lead early on in the set. The Saints lost the third set 25-12, ending the match with the Blue Devils taking the sweep.
Brooke Schermann (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) had a team-high six kills. Like the match with Coe in the morning, Barsody had the most digs with 20. Also like the match with Coe, Kessler led with 12 assists.
Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) added 11 assists.
