MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica volleyball team defeated North Central University (Minn.) in three sets on Tuesday night, making its record 1-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC).
Set number one started off with a run of three points for the Rams. The Saints tied the score at four, then lost a bit of momentum to a Rams' rally of four points. From there the teams traded serves back and forth until an Amanda Belden (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) kill, after a set from Espi Austvold (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS), got the ball rolling for CSS. The Saints would then go on to score 12 points to the Rams' one, giving them the advantage in the set, allowing them to win 25-17.
The second set would be a closer contest than the first one, with both of the teams battling back and forth over the course of the set. The Rams had the lead early, but it would change five times, eventually putting the Saints on top for the 25-21 victory. In set two, CSS recorded 17 kills, to the Rams' 10.
In the third and final set, North Central collected 11 kills, to the Saints' nine, but it would not be enough to give NCU the advantage. The game began with the Saints scoring 10 points, while the Rams were only able to score four. This was a disparity the Rams were not able to recover from, despite a small rally that brought the lead to within four. North Central would not get closer than that though, and CSS took the set, with a final score of 25-18.
