Women's Basketball Drops Bridge Battle to UWS

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was outscored 37-16 in the second half as conference leader University of Wisconsin-Superior defeated the Saints 65-48 on Saturday at the Reif Gymnasium.

First Half Battle
The Saints started out strong in the first half, and the two teams were neck-and-neck over the course of the half. The Yellowjackets hit the first shots of the game, and held the lead for the first five minutes of play. At the five minute mark, the Saints took the lead on a Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) 3-pointer. CSS ended the first quarter up by four points with a score of 17-13. The start of the second period saw more aggressive play from Scholastica and four minutes in, Holly Peterson (Rochester, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) sunk a 3-pointer and put the Saints up by nine points, their largest lead of the game. Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) also stepped up for the Saints, going 5-for-5 from the field in the half. The Yellowjackets went on a seven point run in the last three minutes of the half to cut the halftime margin down to 32-28 in favor of CSS.

Second Half Struggles
The second half saw problems for the Saints. In the third quarter, the 'jackets scored 13 unanswered points in seven minutes. They held CSS to five points over the course of the quarter, and ended the third leading the Saints 45-37. UWS had a 19-9 advantage on the glass in the quarter.

The fourth quarter wasn't much better for Scholastica, and they were never able to get to within less than eight points of Superior's lead. The Yellowjackets kept pushing and took the victory with a final score of 65-48.

Top Performers for CSS
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) led the Saints in points with 10, after going 5-for-5 in the first half, and she pulled in five rebounds. Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) was right behind her with eight points and five rebounds of her own. Holly Peterson (Rochester, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) was another big contributor for CSS with eight points, four rebounds, and four steals. 

Top Performers for UWS
Hailey Kontny, Sarah Lekson, and Allyssa Lindberg all had 12 points for the Yellowjackets. Kontny had nine of her 12 points in the first half. Bailee Bartunek had 12 rebounds for UWS and Hadley Skalmoski tallied 11.

The Saints will finish the regular season next weekend at home with North Central University on Friday and the University of Northwestern on Saturday. The Saints are currently tied for the fifth and final UMAC Tournament spot with Martin Luther College and got a favorable result in North Central defeating Martin Luther this afternoon
